At Premier Piano Gallery, each instrument is evaluated before disassembled with 3 directions of restoration. These are the ABC’s of the piano: Action, Belly, and Case.
Action: The keyboard and keys are refurbished including new felt, bushings, and keytops. Premium parts are used for all action replacement projects. Our Steinway restorations use genuine Steinway action parts. Also available are new custom made key sets.
Belly: This includes pinblock, soundboard, plate, strings, and dampers. Quartersawn lumber core pinblocks made of rock maple are used in our rebuilds. If the piano needs a new soundboard, premium Sitka spruce panels are used. The bridge is re-notched and pinned, or a new bridge cap is installed. The plate is repaired, painted, and lettered. The strings used are the best wire and tuning pins available. Dampers are refurbished and new felts installed. When the action and belly work are completed the piano is placed under an action “pounder”, where the piano is played vigorously for up to 10 hours. This settles the action and stretches the strings, speeding the stabilization of the piano.
Case: The old finish is removed and repairs made to the exposed wood. Primers, stains, and top coats are applied and following sufficient cure time, the piano is sanded and polished to its final sheen. All hardware is plated, polished, or replaced. In addition to our lacquer finishes in black or clear (for wood tones), we are among a handful of shops in the nation to offer high gloss polyester.

In a great performance of music, it takes two people: the artist at the keyboard, and the piano rebuilder behind the scenes who gets the instrument up to its full potential, so it can satisfy the unique desires of the artist and audience. Our mission is to make every piano that comes to Premier Piano look, feel and sound as new as possible. In fact, when our rebuilds are placed on showroom floors, often customers cannot tell they are rebuilt pianos! At Premier Piano, we take these incredible pianos, and bring them to an entirely new life.
Restoring a piano takes time, quality resources, and attention to detail. We are passionate about high quality piano restoration using genuine factory parts, and adhering to the highest standards of rebuild care. The founder and owner, Tom Zasadny, has been a piano technician, rebuilder and craftsman since the mid-1970’s, and is also the piano technician for the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, Washington University, Lindenwood University, several Steinway Piano dealerships, University of Iowa and more.
A piano is not only made to produce music, it also stands as a work of art itself. The life of a grand piano can vary from 30 - 80 years based on quality of the manufacturer, usage, climate, and maintenance schedule. With proper restoration techniques provided by Premier Piano, your piano will sound and look like new.
Restoration cost is so much less than replacement. A complete restoration of a grand piano can be one third to one half the cost of a new instrument. Also, every piano has a story behind it. By restoring the piano instead of replacing it, the story behind that piano can live on while the appearance, touch, and tone of the instrument will be like new.
